Playa Flamingo is famous for its crystal azul waters, gentle family-friendly surf and clean white sand. This is why it’s considered one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. This, and dozens of beaches like it, dot the country’s north Pacific Gold Coast from Brasilito up to Potrero. It’s an area bustling with activity and growth, all well anchored by the well-established ocean-view community of Mar Vista in Flamingo.

Evidence of rapid expansion is the new world-class marina that is well underway in Flamingo. This marina will attract visitors from all over the world, and will feature a hotel, shops and boardwalk, as well as condos in future phases. With the project only half done, the surrounding vicinity has taken notice, as commerce is already booming.

Right next to the marina is Flamingo’s Plaza development, with shops, nice restaurants and other attractions. The Moonlight Market on Monday nights is very popular, showcasing the wares of local artisans and vendors.

Vibrant variety

A little further north is Surfside/Potrero, a seaside community of expats from around the world, all enjoying the many lovely hotels and restaurants. Night times are lively here on “the strip,” with many venues featuring live music any given night of the week.

Further south to Brasilito, you’ll find much of the same but more in the style of a quaint fishing village.

There’s never a shortage of things to do throughout the Flamingo area. For instance, on a whim, you can rent an ATV and tour the inland jungles, or a jet ski to tour the beaches and do some snorkeling. Or perhaps horseback riding on the beach is more your speed. Adventure seekers can quench their thirst on a day trip to any one of the many national parks and preserves that make Guanacaste the most visited province in the country. For all these reasons, construction is up, land sales are brisk and the boom is here.

The “jewel” of this area is its pure natural beauty, and it is fiercely protected. Though development is trending up, the coastal nature remains untouched, and by all accounts, unaffected. This ensures long-term appeal to attract visitors and residents alike.

Originally born in London, Ontario, Canada, Mike moved to South Florida in 1982. There, he got married and raised a family of 5 while running his own print shop and graphic design company for 30 years. Finding himself between lives in 2013, Mike made the move to Costa Rica for a change of scenery. It wasn’t until he came to Guanacaste and settled in Flamingo that he finally found his place in the world, saying, “this place just agrees with me”. Mike continues to do freelance design work, copy writing, project and event planning and tries to stay active in the community. Finally realizing his true passion, you can often find him singing and playing his guitar in bars and clubs up and down the Gold Coast.
