Motivated by Alcohol-Free Challenge (Versión en Español a continuación)

A few weeks ago I started a “Free Challenge of No Alcohol for 21 Days” for a very special group of women.

This came about because while working with this group, I realized how drinking alcohol is so ingrained (very deeply) in our culture. Most people don’t even question at all if this social behavior around alcohol is actually serving them.

Heck, most people don’t ask questions about most social behaviors that are considered “normal” or “expected.” Most people sheepishly follow the collective norms of society … but that’s a subject for another day. Let’s look at drinking for now, shall we?

What if you started to question everything? This is one of the most powerful things you can do. The women in our group started asking questions about drinking, and because of this one simple exercise, the challenge began. We started by asking ourselves seven questions.

Go ahead, get yourself a pen and paper and join us in this little exercise. Make a conscious list in response to the following questions.

  1. What are short-term benefits I receive by drinking?
  2. What are the long-term benefits I receive by drinking?
  3. What are the main fears that arise if I think about stopping my drinking habit?
  4. What is the worst thing that can happen if I stop drinking?
  5. What are the great things that can happen if I stop drinking?
  6. Does the habit control me or do I control the habit?
  7. Can I go out with friends and simply choose not to drink without having any anxiety?

Don’t you find it interesting that in most cases, it is so easy to question when someone is offering you the opportunity to stop drinking but not questioning the habit itself?

It is well known that this topic touches uncomfortable areas of people’s lives that may be considered better ¨not to look at.¨ However, covering old wounds and memories with alcohol is definitely not the healthiest solution.

My recommendation: if some resistance comes with the mere idea of stopping this habit, then it is something you definitely need to look at.

Be honest

Did you do the exercise? Now take a good look at your answers and be honest: is this habit serving you and serving others for the highest good?

Need more convincing? Here are just a few of the many detrimental effects that alcohol has on your body:

  1. Weight gain
  2. Speeds up the aging process
  3. High blood pressure, stroke, and other heart-related diseases
  4. Liver disease
  5. Nerve damage
  6. Sexual problems
  7. Permanent damage to the brain
  8. Ulcers
  9. Gastritis (inflammation of stomach walls)
  10. Mood disorders

The idea of this article is to truly consider where you stand with alcohol. I believe it is okay to drink sometimes (high-quality alcohol, with good clean ingredients and ideally organic versions), knowing that it is you in total control of the situation. But if this is not the case, then we must look deeper to the roots of our lack of control. By looking directly into our own darkness we can truly begin to heal.
