Costa Rica has dozens of adventure opportunities. You’ll search reviews, websites and social media to identify the one place that offers several adventures for your investment.

I visited Vandara last month and wanted to see what made them different from all the other good parks.

The drive was just a quick 30-minute trip from Liberia. The views were beautiful on the way to the location. My first thoughts… we were going into the jungle in the heart of Guanacaste.

The receptionists were very friendly and had plenty of information to offer. You really need to book online in advance to secure your slots. They are flexible, but I can see why timing is an important aspect of the adventures. We never felt rushed or as though any time was wasted.

I didn’t care to ride a horse—I’ve ridden horses… big deal—but they said it’s the way to the ziplines. So I said Sure.

They made sure I knew what to expect and how to ride (as if I had never ridden, which is OK because they want to ensure people’s safety). The ride followed a trail in the midst of thick jungle. It was really beautiful.

The eight ziplines were all beautiful. Yes, I’ve done ziplines before, so I wanted to see what this nearly one-mile of lines would offer. The rides were smooth and offered excellent views of the paradise where Vandara is centred.

The waterslide was next… yes, I grew up in Texas and have done plenty of them—big deal.

Wow… I was surprised by the tossing and swishing. I thought it was about to end… and nope—kept going. I started to slow down and then a wave of water pushed me to the end.

The included meal was a typical Costa Rican casado, which I happen to really enjoy. And the rice pudding… when the waitress saw me licking the bowl, she brought me another round.

The gift shop offered plenty of choices for souvenirs.

Don’t discount the culture lesson. It’s interactive and informative. It makes you appreciate Costa Rican history. The presenter makes it fun.

Then came our own private time at the hot pools. After a short walk, we reached numerous pools—so many options to sit and relax. There’s even a mini-bar if you want a refreshment.

I stood under the cool waterfall, then sat and enjoyed the hot springs—nothing but birds chirping and the low sound of music in the distance—total tranquilidad.

The sky was filled with clouds and we had a couple of sprinkles, then the sun started shining through the diminishing clouds. We sat there in the springs and did what Costa Rica offers most: a peaceful experience.

Yes, you have options, but if you’re near Liberia… make sure your family experiences this piece of paradise.
