Britt Nelson, 75, came to Costa Rica in 2011 from Florida. He is a retired, multi-award winning photo journalist, reporter and news editor for the New York Times Company. He has been published thousands of times on the front pages of American newspapers. He is also a former political columnist for the Costa Rica Star News having written 357 political essays in 4-years. Britt’s love of writing books and screenplays came alive as he produced one book and two screenplays during 2024. Two are available on Amazon Books.– Black Caddy and 1945: Out of India with another on the way entitled ‘Beyond Belief — 1860 Texas.’ 

Born in upstate New York, Britt’s family moved to Washington, DC in 1954, when he was 5-years-old. When Britt was 13, he and several friends rode their bicycles to the Lincoln Memorial where they witnessed Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. Three months later President Kenney was shot dead in Dallas. 

“I was a little white spot on a big black page when I saw Dr. King give his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial. His words, I heard that day, stayed with me to this day and greatly influenced my career in print journalism.”

“My father took my sister Robin and I to the Memorial Bridge to watch President Kennedy’s funeral procession. We witnessed it all close up and personal. It was then i decided I wanted to be a newspaper reporter.”

Over the years, Britt amassed 20 writing awards for excellence in journalism including three New York Times’ highest internal award The Chairman’s Award given by then NYT Chairman of the Board of Director’s Arthur “Punch” Ochs Sulzberger Sr.
