Costa Rican Rompope (Eggnog) Recipe

Prepare to immerse yourself in the festive spirit with this traditional Costa Rican Rompope recipe. A perfect beverage to light up your holidays, this rich and creamy concoction combines the flavors of nutmeg and rum or guaro to bring you a drink that is both comforting and celebratory. The following recipe yields 5 liters of rompope and takes just 30 minutes to whip up!

Ingredients:

Evaporated milk: 3 cans (400 g each)

Sweetened condensed milk: 2 cans (397 g each)

Water: 5 cans (use the empty milk cans to measure)

Eggs: 7, large

Nutmeg: 1/2 teaspoon, freshly ground for best flavor

Rum or Guaro: 1 and a half cups (choose based on your preference; guaro is a traditional Costa Rican sugarcane liquor)

Instructions:

  1. Blend the Base: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, water, and eggs until well combined and slightly frothy. This should take about 5 minutes.
  2. Heat the Mixture: Transfer the liquid mixture to a large pot and heat it over a low flame. Constantly stir the mixture for 20 minutes, ensuring that it doesn’t come to a boil to maintain a smooth texture.
  3. Infuse with Nutmeg: Add the ground nutmeg into the heated mixture, stirring well to infuse the flavor evenly. Remove the pot from the heat source.
  4. Cool and Fortify: Allow the mixture to cool down to room temperature. Once cooled, stir in the rum or guaro, blending well to incorporate the liquor thoroughly into the rompope.
  5. Chill and Serve: Transfer the rompope to a jug or bottle and refrigerate it until it’s chilled and ready to serve. Serve it in small glasses, garnished with a little sprinkle of nutmeg on top, if desired.

Your Costa Rican Rompope is now ready to delight your guests and warm your festive gatherings with its creamy texture and spirited flavor. Enjoy your homemade holiday treat responsibly!
