What’s that big nest in the trees?

  • Hornets?
  • Wasps?
  • Flies?
  • Ants?

Good try, they are termites.

Termites are small insects that are found throughout Costa Rica. They are known for their ability to eat away at wood and other materials, which can cause significant damage to buildings and other structures. However, these insects also serve an important role in the ecosystem by breaking down dead wood and other organic matter.

In Costa Rica, termites are found in a variety of habitats, including rainforests, dry forests and agricultural areas. They are particularly well suited to living in tropical environments, where the warm and humid conditions provide the perfect breeding ground for these insects. Despite their small size, termites can cause significant damage to buildings and other structures, which can be expensive to repair.

The termite’s nest is divided into several chambers, with each chamber designated for a particular purpose such as living, food storage and nursery. These chambers are connected through a system of tunnels and tubes, which allows for easy movement within the nest. The walls of the chambers are thick and provide insulation for the colony from harsh weather conditions outside.

Despite the potential dangers posed by termites, many people in Costa Rica have learned how to live with these insects. In fact, some people even consider termites to be a source of food. In some areas of the country, people collect termites in large numbers and roast them over an open flame. This practice is often referred to as “termite fishing” and is considered a delicacy by many people in the region. (They taste a little like popcorn, some report.)
