The tranquil town of Brasilito awoke to find one of the local shrimp boats under water at the beginning of this November. The captain and his crew were heading out to sea when they ran aground on a small reef putting a sizeable hole into their hull.
Their immediate response was to run for shore and beach their boat, which in-turn lead to a disastrous next few days for our local beaches and waters. These things happen in marine environments, but having diesel spill into the water and debris land on the beaches was an unfortunate inevitability as the boat sat there and broke up.
The incredible positive from all of this came on a sunny morning a few days after the sinking, when the entire community of local Brasiliteños, ex-pats, organizations, resorts, schools, community service workers, police, coast guard, fire response and more came together in a massive beach clean up. It was one of the most inspiring moments in a long time as everyone worked together to reclaim the beautiful beaches of the area. A huge thank you to the organizers and all the donators…. a job well done!!!
