Pura Cautious

In this land of Pura Vida and adventure there are things lurking that are waiting to affect us. Most have moved here to enjoy the peacefulness and to have the adventure that is supposed to exist around every corner.

Once you arrive here and get off that plane you realise very fast that this is not like back home. In
some cases, the language difference is a hindrance and the processes are vastly different than
what we are used to. Expecting things to be as you are accustomed to is a big pitfall for people
living here or planning to relocate.
bruce-spenceDon’t expect anything to be the same as home and you won’t be disappointed. By nature, we want
to trust what is being said and the recommendations of others. Meeting someone that speaks your
language can lull you into a false sense of security causing your guard to go down.
You soon realise that there are characters, as one of my clients said, “The people arriving here that
are running from something or running to something.” This is a good description that encompasses
most of us.
It’s interesting that people, when in their home country, will follow good business practices and
require contracts and look at things closely. When hit in the head with paradise everything we
learned and the good practices we use back home are thrown out the window – because it’s so
beautiful. I personally have been at fault doing this, trusting the so called “trusted” person, trusting
the so called “good” lawyer, that a deal is done or will be honoured due to integrity.
This is unfortunately not the land of the hand shake deal. Don’t be fooled by razzle dazzle and the
material trappings of flashy foreign cars and fast talking dealers.
Remember that paradise is what you make of it. Deal with people that by their actions show that
they understand what the term Pura Vida is. Ask questions, ask around for references don’t go on
the surface. That can be deceiving. Remember to follow your gut, it is usually right. Due diligence
is a practice that we all need to do more rigorously.
On a lighter side. Who’s your Doppelganger?
